3 Fun Facts About Bernese Mountain Dogs
In 2019, Bernese Mountain Dogs ranked as the 22nd most popular breed in the US. Honestly, we are not surprised due to their beautiful markings, colossal strength, and warm personality.
However, here are several facts about Berners that you probably didn’t know:
They Were Bred for Farm Life
Nowadays, it seems you can’t watch a commercial or family movie without a Berner gracing a screen (which is just as it should be). But Bernese Mountain Dogs were not originally bred to be family pets. In fact, they originally were bred for the farmlands of Switzerland to “cattle, pull carts, and be watchdogs and loyal companions” according to Dogtime.com.
They Were the Original DoorDash
Yep, you read that right. Bernese Mountain Dogs used to be known as “cheese dogs” in the 1850’s when cheese plants were opening up and they delivered dairy products to different destinations. Solid and sturdy, Berners are carting dogs and can pull up to 1000 lbs which is 10x their weight!
Even if they are not used for this very often, carting became a sport and Berners can compete in different clubs around the US.
Berners Were an Endangered Species
Bernese Mountain Dogs are one of four Swiss Mountain Breeds. The others are Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, the Englebucher, and the Appenzeller. In the 1800s, these breeds were threatened by the rise of the St. Bernard.
However, one man, Franz Schertenleib, dedicated himself to resurrecting the popularity of these breeds and he traipsed across Europe, searching for noble specimens and signing the praises of these breeds.
By the mid-1900s, the breeds were well on their way to the popularity that they have today. In 1937, the American Kennel Club recognized the breed on April 13, 1937, as the Bernese Mountain Dog.
As you can see, Berners have a rich heritage of service and companionship. If you are considering adding a Berner to your own family, click here to learn about our adoption options.
