Safe and Tasty Foods for Your Dog During the Holidays
With the holiday baking and feasting right around the corner, we don’t want our four-legged family members to be limited to only dry kibble, so we have compiled a list of foods that are not only safe and healthy but that your dog will LOVE.
Remember, everything is in moderation. The recommended amount is that human food makes up only 10% of a dog’s diet, but with these tasty dishes, this will be your dog’s favorite holiday season yet.
1. Pumpkin for High Fiber
Not only is the pumpkin flavor in season for the fall, but it has great benefits for your dog’s digestive system as well. In fact, WebMD for dogs describes it as a “superfood” for pets due to its micronutrients and fiber. If your dog has a loosened stool, adding a side of the pumpkin will get its tail wagging. Their digestive system will thank you too.
2. Carrots for Teething or Extra Crunch
Carrots are our go-to favorite snack from the fridge for our Berner pack. Not only are these a healthy snack, but frozen carrots are a great relief if you have a teething pup. While their favorite part about carrots is the sound of the crunch, you may consider giving them smaller/bite-sized chunks so it doesn’t become a choking hazard.
3. Apples for Vitamins and Minerals
While you might hold off feeding your dog a slice of apple pie, the fruit itself can be a great snack for your dog. Not only are they a great source of vitamins but they are also high in fiber, which can help their digestive system like pumpkin can but Apples provide a significant amount of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
You should not feed your dog an entire apple, but should first slice it and remove the apple seeds, which are dangerous to your dog’s health.
4. Celery for Bad Breath
This may be your favorite tip yet. While our pets may be some of our favorite people, more than one of them has chronic bad breath. This is where celery can help! Not only do they love the crunch much like with carrots, but this snack is cheap and can help freshen their breath.
5. Peanut Butter for Health Fats
This is one of the most common household foods that we give to our pets. Not only does peanut butter give them healthy fats, but licking this inside a toy like a Kong or chew toy like this one can keep them busy while you cook up your holiday feast.
We recommended getting peanut butter with no added sugar and absolutely NOT xylitol in the ingredients. This sugar substitute can be poisonous for dogs.
With this list, you won’t hopefully have to resist those puppy dog eyes that follow you around in the kitchen but can give them snacks that are not only safe but also healthy for your furry family member.
