How to Prepare Your Home for a Baby Berner!
Approximately 4.1 million pets are brought home every year in the US.
It’s not as dramatic as a new infant, but a new fluffy baby is coming to live at your house, so there are a few changes you will want to make accordingly, such as removing poisonous house plants.
Read this article for tips on how you can bring your AKC Bernese Mountain Dog Puppy home with confidence, knowing that it’s coming to a safe, hazard-free, puppy-proofed home.
Remove All Items That Are Within Biting Distance
Similar to child-proofing your home, you will want to make sure that all decor and portable furniture that is within reach of your new friend is temporarily removed (think lamp cords, hanging plants, etc).
Puppies love to play and chew, so until they get used to their new environment and know what the rules are, it’s important to remove as many distractions as possible.
Secure Trash Cans and Toilet Lids
This may seem obvious, but remember, puppies are dogs without a lot of awareness, so they may go where their nose leads them, and what could smell better in your house than where you dispose of all your leftover food?
Make sure that your trash cans have a lid or place them out of reach of the puppy (such as in the kitchen cabinet under the sink).
You also might want to remember to close the toilet lid while you’re at it. 😉
Prepare Your Yard
If at all possible, fence in your yard to guarantee that your puppy has a safe, roomy area to play and explore. It’s important to make sure that they cannot jump over it, dig under it, or wiggle through it.
If you cannot fence your whole yard or don’t want your pup to access all of it, designate a puppy play area with temporary fencing so it can still come outside but you don’t have to put the effort or expense in fencing your entire property parameter.
If you have a pool, make sure the pup does not have access when you’re not around.
