Comparing St Bernards to Bernese Mountain Dogs
What’s the difference Between a St. Bernard & Bernese Mountain Dog?
If you are looking for a large family dog with a loving temperament, St. Bernards and Bernese Mountain Dogs are both gentle giants with mild temperaments.
Which is better? How are they different?
Here we will highlight the qualities and challenges of each breed to help you make the best decision for your family pet.
Saint Bernards
Saint Bernards are significantly larger than their silky-haired counterparts, although both are fairly equal in height (though Saints can be an inch or two taller). Saint Bernards males can get up to 200lbs.
Historically, they were bred for farmwork, but eventually came to assist monks in the Alps with draft and rescue purposes.
Since then, they have evolved to become loving family companions with laidback personalities. They come in two options of long hair or short hair, while Bernese Mountain Dogs are only long-haired.
Due to their loyal and protective nature, Saints can be somewhat aggressive if they are not socialized at a young age.
Bernese Mountain Dogs
Bernese Mountain Dogs are just slightly smaller in height than the Saints, but weigh significantly less with males usually growing up to only 120lbs.
They are a newer breed than the Saint Bernards and were originally from Bern, Switzerland where they were bred for pulling heavy carts of cheese.
Although both have mild, loving temperaments, the most noticeable quality is that, unlike Saints, they have long, silky black coats as opposed to their fair-colored cousins (this also hides dirt better, just sayin’).
When considering which breed to adopt, Berners are one of the least aggressive breeds toward adults and children, however, they are known to be territorial with other male dogs.
Which Breed is Better?
Only you know which will fit best into your home and family, but Bernese Mountain Dogs check all the boxes of intelligence, beauty, and big-hearted teddy bears that fit well into any family.
