Keeping Our Bernese Mountain Dogs Bug-Free in Wyoming and Across the United States
Living in Wyoming, we’re fortunate to have a dry and sandy landscape that helps keep pesky fleas and ticks at bay during our Bernese Mountain Dogs’ daily outings. After spending 25 years in Tennessee and four years in Oklahoma, where the environments were quite different, I’ve learned a thing or two about keeping our furry friends safe from bugs. Here are four effective methods I use to steer clear of those nasty critters:
- Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth
My top choice for pest prevention is food grade diatomaceous earth! This natural powder is great for dusting on our dogs and even sprinkling over their food. It helps combat intestinal parasites and keeps our Berners healthy. Plus, it’s easy to use—just a quick dusting does the trick!
- Avon Skin So Soft Baths
Another favorite method of mine is giving our pups baths with Avon Skin So Soft. This classic product has been a go-to for many pet owners and works wonders in repelling bugs while keeping their coats soft and shiny. - Richard’s Organic Flea and Tick Spray
For a little extra protection, I like using Richard’s Organic flea and tick spray. It’s made with natural ingredients and provides peace of mind when we’re out and about. It’s easy to apply and doesn’t harm our pets.
- DIY Bug Repellent
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can make your own bug repellent! Just be cautious if you have sensitive noses in the house. I use lauric acid from coconut oil combined with essential oils like lavender, rosemary, tea tree, and lemongrass. This natural concoction is effective and smells great!
Over the years, these methods have helped keep our Bernese Mountain Dogs happy and bug-free. Whether you’re in a similar environment or dealing with a more humid area, I hope these tips can help you protect your furry friends from pesky pests!
